On 29 January 2017, during the Chinese Spring Festival, a grand celebration on the Chinese Lunar New Year – Year of Rooster was held at Vabaduse Square in Tallinn, Estonia.

The Acting Mayor of Tallinn Mr. Taavi Aas and the Chinese Ambassador H.E. Mr. Qu Zhe addressed the audience before the celebration. Mr. Taavi Aas warmly welcomed the delegation from Beijing and expressed his best wishes to the Chinese people in the Year of Rooster. He said he was very satisfied with the cooperation with the Beijing Municipal Government and hoped both sides will double their efforts to bring more benefits to people in both capital cities.

Ambassador Qu hailed the efforts made by Tallinn City Government and Beijing Municipal Government for holding the Happy New Year Celebration Event in Tallinn over the past eight years. He spoke highly about the fruitful cooperation between the two capital cities and encouraged both sides to make new achievements in the years to come. The Ambassador expressed his seasonal greetings to citizens of Tallinn at the end of his speech by wishing everyone a very prosperous and happy new year.

During the celebration, artists and dancers from Beijing performed lion dance, traditional Chinese dances, acrobatics, martial arts, etc. The Chinese craftsmen demonstrated Chinese intangible cultural heritage, for example paper-cutting, straw plaiting and ice sculpturing. A lot of people were interested in the outdoor photo exhibition with the theme of "Silk Road-A New Look" and "China Story 2016". The Vabaduse Square was packed with large crowds attending the celebration. Tallinn TV had a live broadcast on the event.

In the evening of the same day, the Grand Chinese New Year Concert was held in the Estonian Concert Hall. China National Arts Fund award winning orchestras – Shaanxi Broadcasting Chinese and Zhejiang Traditional Orchestra staged a wonderful performance and brought traditional Chinese music to hundreds of Estonian music lovers.

In addition, as a part of the celebrations, the Chinese Embassy in Estonia held public screenings of Chinese feature films at Kino Artis before the Spring Festival and attracted many movie-goers.
