The visit of the Riigikogu Foreign Affairs Committee delegation to the Taiwan region of China in disregard of China’s opposition recently, seriously violates the one-China principle and the commitments made by the Estonian side in the Joint Communique of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Estonia. We have lodged solemn representations to the Estonian side.

There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. China strongly opposes the official contact with Taiwan region in any form by countries having diplomatic relations with China.

The one-China principle is the political foundation for China-Estonia relations. We urge the relevant authority of the Estonian Riigikogu as well as its members to be prudent in terms of Taiwan question, stop interfering into the internal affairs of China, stop sending wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” forces, so as to safeguard the overall interests of bilateral relations.
